Why I Mourn David Bowie/Invitation to a Point Loma Concert

January 12, 2016

When I was getting ready to invite you to a winter concert I heard on the radio that David Bowie died. I stopped my steps as the news made me so very much sad.

And it made me think. Why exactly I became so much sad today, rushing down to put on my favorite song by Bowie  Life on Mars. I have not been always following closely Bowie and did not buy every of his album, have not even looked yet at his last album that came out three days ago. What is it that I feel my life lost another dot that makes up the full portrait of my lovely surroundings? Even though his music  is here, I feel as if I lost an inseparable part of an atmosphere I have created around my life. It is populated by many close friends and family and  by writers, poets, composers, artists, philosophers, actors, musicians, public figures and various aquantances of upbeat nature, down to earth, sincere people I seek out, each adding to the tone I want to have in my life. And when an artist you like is suddenly gone, you feel it tangibly as a loss, a loss of comletion of a picture  you have been creating of you on this planet. As anyone, also I choose people carefully into my circles and Bowie was there, very much contributing to the tone of my life and its melody.  His Ziggy Stardust and Honky Dory brought a feel to my growing up in the late seventies and eighties with its sound and especially with the search, his urge to find out, and of course his glamour, his intrepid nature to be what he wanted to be, and then, his nature so far away from being arrogant or vulgar. And his talents were tremendous. Something about him was noble and elegant. When I put on Ziggy or Hunky Dory, It trigggers all kinds of memories,

but also the tone, the atmosphere around me and within me changes and changes for better. It makes me feel good. His voice, his intonation, his earnest to convey, his elegant music, his passion, his humanity. It all sums up for a chunk of inspiration I have been draw ing from him. He lifts my spirit and makes me search and try and experiment. Love his music, love his poetry, sad he is gone. Below is his  text of my favorite song, favorite poem.

And here comes my invitation to the concert and forgive my distraction above, but I felt like sharing my thoughts ....

Life on Mars by David Bowie

It's a God-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling no
And her daddy has told her to go

But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen

But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
